The calculation is geodesic — done on the Earth's curved surface rather than a flat projection — so it stays accurate from a back garden up to an entire region. Practical accuracy therefore depends on how precisely you place the corners: at typical zoom levels you can place a pin within a metre or two, which is well within a percent for most plots.

No. You can place any number of corners (three or more), so irregular plots, winding boundaries, and complex field shapes are all fine. Just avoid crossing the boundary over itself — a self-intersecting outline makes the mathematical area meaningless.
